Technical Theatre and Stage Management

The goal of this competitive and comprehensive program is to ensure all students are well prepared to secure a position with a major national or regional theatre company, a highly competitive apprenticeship or fellowship, or selection into a prestigious M.F.A. program.

Highlights

  • Accelerated B.F.A. program – three years/two summers (eight-semester program)
  • Ideal for students interested in lighting design, scenic design, stage management or directing
  • Varied production schedule allowing exposure to a wide range of styles and genres
  • Highly immersive professional summer stock theatre company experience, the only program of its kind
  • Significant schedule of nationally and internationally recognized technicians, designers and guest artists
  • Focus on “the business of the business” – career/professional planning and individualized preparation for the next step in your career

Curriculum

  • Students spend their first four semesters exploring all aspects of technical production and design. During their final four semesters, students focus on an area of specialization: scenic design, lighting design, stage management, production or directing.
  • The program is focused on the process and techniques of producing theatre. Students are further challenged with immersive workshops, master classes, technical coursework and focused instruction.
  • Stephens’ curriculum begins preparing students for the realities of the business from their first semester. Mentors and advisers help students build the body of work and provide individualized feedback specific to each student's professional goals.

Preparation

  • The curriculum includes two summers at Stephens College’s Okoboji Summer Theatre (OST), a working professional summer stock theatre company that offers a rigorous production schedule of 13 shows in 10 weeks. Students work alongside professional technicians, designers and other guests artists as they pursue their chosen field of study.
  • Students who are interested in completing a competitive internship or fellowship at a comparable theatre in lieu of their second summer at OST are allowed to do so with faculty adviser approval.
