Title IX (Sexual Harassment)

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX) prohibits discrimination based on gender in educational programs which receive federal financial assistance. Programs and activities which may be included are: admissions, recruitment, financial aid, academic programs, athletics, housing and employment. Title IX also protects male and female students from unlawful sexual harassment in school programs and activities. Protection applies to any person, including students, faculty and staff.

Stephens maintains a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination, harassment and sexual offense of any kind, including but not limited to violence, stalking or exploitation. When an allegation of an offense is brought to an appropriate administrator’s attention, the College will take prompt, decisive action to investigate the allegation, initiate the disciplinary process if warranted and issue appropriate sanctions against any student found responsible for such acts, whether on or off campus. Furthermore, it is a violation of College Policy to retaliate against any person making a report of Title IX violations or against any person cooperating in the investigation of any allegation of violations. Retaliation includes intimidation, threats or harassment against any such reporting party or third party.

The Title IX Coordinator serves as a resource for students wishing to report any acts of sexual misconduct, gender-based discrimination or other violations of Title IX. The coordinator provides oversight for all complaints and identifies any patterns, issues or problems regarding those complaints. The coordinator also supports informational initiatives enabling students, staff and faculty to fully understand sexual violence and harassment as forms of discrimination and further educates the community about College policy and procedures.
