Incoming freshmen and transfer students continued what is becoming an annual tradition at Stephens College on Sunday when they walked along the pedestrian bridges to Journey Plaza in the heart of campus, where loved ones were waiting to greet them.
The walk symbolizes the beginning of what will be their educational journey at Stephens. When they graduate, they’ll make that walk again, that time in the opposite direction to join the family of Stephens alumnae.
The Crossing of the Bridge Ceremony began last fall as a way to help freshmen get a better understanding of how they belong to a broader community. While they’re excited about getting to know classmates, the walk also introduces new students to alumnae and shows them that the Stephens community expands well beyond campus boundaries.
“It’s really a chance to show them how they belong to this larger community of women,” said Marissa Todd, Director of Alumnae Relations and Philanthropy.
Family members cheered as the students took their first steps onto campus as Stephens women — a title they’ll carry forever.
“When you come to Stephens, you become part of a very powerful network,” Todd said. “We look forward to watching our new students learn, grow and eventually become part of our alumnae ranks.”
Stephens President Dianne Lynch led the students over the bridges before formally welcoming them in the Kimball Ballroom in Lela Raney Wood Hall. There, she encouraged students to be open to new experiences and embrace opportunities while at Stephens.
“The only thing you can’t do,” she said, “is not do.”
