Prospective students interested in dance at Stephens College can experience the program March 3 during a comprehensive, daylong event that will showcase what the School of Creative and Performing Arts has to offer on the dance floor and in the classroom.

Dr. Gail Humphries Mardirosian, dean of the School of Creative and Performing Arts, said this is the first time Stephens has offered such an up close and personal experience for prospective dance students.

“We have a vibrant and varied dance experience at Stephens,” she said. “We hope interested students will get a true sense of the versatility and quality of our offerings.”

The daylong event titled “Experience Stephens: Dance” will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Participants will experience master classes in ballet, modern, tap and musical theatre led by celebrated guest artists Carol Schuberg and Darren Gibson. Stars Athletic Dance Coach Amanda Abbe will lead a master class in competitive dance.

The event will include a meet-and-greet with Mardirosian, faculty and students as well as student-led tours of campus and performing arts facilities. Participants also will have the opportunity to meet with financial aid and learn about the admission process. Prospective students will each receive two complimentary tickets to the Annual Dance Company Spring Concert, performed that evening at 7:30 p.m. in the Macklanburg Playhouse. Guest artist and student choreography will be premiered at this annual concert.

“We offer a rigorous training program with ballet and modern as the foundation,” Mardirosian said. “From there, we offer many specialized world dance courses such as Irish Dance, which was offered this past fall. Students also have the opportunity to choreograph and work with world-class guest artists.”

This academic year, guest artists included Schuberg, a seasoned educator and Broadway performer who not only taught dance classes at Stephens in the fall but worked as the choreographer on the musical “Anything Goes.” Gibson is on campus for the spring semester and will teach dance classes and serve as the artistic director for the spring dance concert. Gibson, who grew up in New York where Eliot Feld discovered him, is a former artistic director for TexARTS Academy and the TexARTS Broadway Company in Austin, Texas.

Stephens offers a three-year, two-summer B.F.A. in Dance program as well as a professional conservatory training program that is available to women and men. Visit Dance page for more info.
