Representing Stephens College on Sept. 28, Dr. Brian Sajko, vice president for enrollment management, went “Over the Edge” of the historic 8th Street Tiger Hotel as part of a fundraiser for Love Inc., a Columbia nonprofit that coordinates services for those who are moving out of poverty.
“Awesome,” was the one-word used by Sajko to describe the experience of rappelling 144 feet down a nine-story building.
“Stephens has a long history of helping those in need and is ecstatic to be a part of this important event,” he said. “The Stephens College Ten Ideals — Belief, Courage, Creativity, Independence, Intelligence, Leadership, Respect, Responsibility, Sensitivity and Support — represent all the good things that Love INC is doing to help those in our area that need a hand up!”
Sajko raised a total of $1,610, which in part came by Stephens faculty and staff contributions in a spare change drive. Leading up to the event, he and fellow top Columbia educators Dr. Mun Choi, University of Missouri System president, and Dr. Peter Stiepleman, superintendent of the Columbia Public Schools, participated in a friendly competition to see who could raise the most money for the community cause.
Choi and Stiepleman raised $1,665 and $1,211, respectively.
And, in the end, the Columbia community came out the real winner.
