October is esports month at Stephens College, and the games begin today with a match against Kansas Wesleyan University. The competition in Overwatch will be aired at 6 p.m. on the big TV in the Student Union of Stamper Common. The event kicks off a month of events. The campus community is invited to watch at 6 p.m. each Monday. You can also tune in at Twitch.tv/stephens_college_esports
“Our players can’t wait to get started,” said Coach Ernest Utterback. “They have been working hard to prepare for this match.”
Stephens College made history in April when it became the first women’s college to sponsor a varsity esports program. Tryouts were held this fall, and a team of 12 players, ranging from freshman to senior, was selected.
Stephens is a member of the National Association of Collegiate eSports (NACE), which includes 90 percent of varsity collegiate esports in the country.
