Already honored as a national College of Distinction for its high-impact approach to education, Stephens College also received special recognition for its Bachelor of Science in Education.

According to the Colleges of Distinction organization, the Education program has a curriculum that is comprehensive in course material and the development of practical skills. It provides program-specific training and abundant opportunities for real-world application. The organization awarded its Education badge after a thorough review of qualities such as accreditation, breadth of program and graduates' record of success.

“Student success is a given at Stephens,” said Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer for Colleges of Distinction. “All of its programs are backed with broad perspectives across the liberal arts. Every student is pushed to be inquisitive and active. And with such extensive experiential learning opportunities, it’s no wonder that Stephens graduates feel expertly prepared.”

Stephens is proud to graduate future educators who are not only knowledgeable, but also efficient mentors who provide empathetic support and effective teaching methods.

Stephens offers a four-year degree and an accelerated three-year, six-semester degree, with dual certifications in early childhood and elementary education. With its on-campus, multi-age lab school and partnerships with local schools, the program provides a student with 400 hours of classroom time by the end of junior year. The faculty place heavy emphasis on integrating science and the arts into daily lessons.

“With our unique arts-integrated lab school and focused curriculum for preschool through fifth grade, the Education program at Stephens gets students in the classroom in their first semester,” said Dr. Brian Sajko, vice president for enrollment management at Stephens.

Students work alongside master-level teachers at the on-campus Children's School at Stephens College and gain real-world experience right from the start. Students prepare and deliver their own lesson plans during junior year. Because of their extensive preparation, Stephens students are often requested by Columbia-area schools for their year of student-teaching, and have an excellent record of job placement.
