The Stephens College Equestrian Studies program has been recognized nationally once again. One of Stephens’ horses, Far Away Crazy Cat (also known as CC) has been named the American Saddlebred Horse Association’s National High Point Champion in her division for 2018.

Stephens College saddle seat students earned several top ribbons at the UPHA American Royal National Championship Horse Show, which was held from Nov. 5-10 in Kansas City, Mo. Kelsey Haney ’19, riding Harlem’s Heirospace, won the Three-Gaited Missouri/Kansas Amateur qualifier and the championship. In addition, Madeleine Oliver ’22, riding The King’s Lady Anne, finished as Reserve Champion in both events behind Haney, and Mallory Stacy ’19, riding Tango Till Dawn, was Reserve Champion in a 15 horse Missouri/Kansas Three-Gaited Show Pleasure Championship. Stephens student Kelsey Haney ’19 and Harlem’s Heirospace have won the Missouri-Kansas Amateur Three-Gaited qualifier at the UPHA American Royal National Championship. She and fellow Stephens students are competing this week at the national horse show in Kansas City, Mo.

Earlier this summer, young riders participated in Stephens College’s annual Summer Riding program, a Columbia tradition since the 1940s. Campers learned the basics of riding, horse care and safety from Stephens equestrian program faculty with assistance from current students.

Stephens College Equestrian hosted Smith and Alexandra Lilly for a two-day clinic and book signing at the historic Stephens College Equestrian Center in late January. Kelly Hulse’s Saddle Seat majors and 16 outside equestrians participated in this enriching opportunity to learn from a multiple world champion trainer and author. In addition, Stephens equestrian students and faculty, as well as members of the Missouri Horse Show Association, held a networking event as part of the visit. The MHSA also held its awards banquet on campus this year.

One of Joan Ranquet’s favorite ways to give back as an animal communicator is to help make homeless animals more adoptable. That’s why when Ranquet ’82, one of the country’s most renowned animal communicators, returned to Stephens College in September to help equestrian students better relate to their horses, she requested to meet with students fostering pets through Second Chance, a local no-kill shelter.
