Stephens Life, the student-run magazine at Stephens College, has once again been named a finalist for the Pacemaker Award by the Associated Collegiate Press. The nomination is for the 2017-18 school year. The Pacemaker is considered the Pulitzer Prize of collegiate publications, and Stephens Life was among the winners in 2017. This fall, the Stephens College School of Design is presenting the fashion exhibition “Teaching from the Collections,” featuring 13 original ensembles from legendary fashion designers Geoffrey Beene, Bonnie Cashin and Claire McCardell.

*Marlena Thompson ’18* recently received the Critics Award for Entrepreneurial Spirit for the presentation of her publication, Ninalem, at 1 Million Cups of Columbia, founded by the Kauffman Foundation. The weekly event provides entrepreneurs an opportunity to share their business ideas and seek advice and support from the local community.

At the Stephens College annual student designer fashion show, fashion students apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to a real runway setting. Fashion design students work all school year to turn their concepts into designs and designs into garments. Students are charged with coming up with creative denim and weekend wear, contemporary sportswear, and tailored designs. Each year specialty design categories are also part of the runway experience.

Stephens College students Fey Chavez ’18 of New Haven, Mo., and Tobie Roberts ’18 of Overbrook, Kan., showed their collections on the runway at Kansas City Fashion Week, which ran March 25-31.

The Jeannene Booher Fashion Lecture Series continues to bring world-renowned designers to the Stephens College campus. This March the Stephens community had the pleasure to hear from Victor Costa, “king of the copycats,” whose significant impact on the fashion industry spans seven decades. Complementing the lecture, the Stephens College Costume Museum and Research Library launched a new gallery exhibit showcasing Costa’s work during his many years as a major fashion influencer and designer.

On March 5, Houston-based fashion designer Victor Costa, who is known as the “king of the copycats,” visited Stephens College fashion classes. Stephens students had the opportunity to talk with and share their fashion collections with the famed designer.
