Two Stephens College fashion students—one for the second consecutive year—are among the 226 recipients nationwide of the highly competitive 2018 YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund (FSF) scholarships. Each student will receive $5,000 from the YMA FSF, which is the fashion industry’s leading educational nonprofit, granting the largest sum of money and total number of scholarships.

Associate Professor Kirsteen Buchanan ’83 and Assistant Professor Lisa Lenoir, both in the School of Design, recently spoke about trends and concepts in wearable technology with journalism students at the University of Missouri. Their presentation was part of a series of informational sessions to help student teams prepare for the 2017-2018 RJI Student Competition, sponsored by the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism.

However, it’s most imperative that a young designer knows herself, the New Yorkers told Stephens fashion students during a recent visit.

Stephanie Carlo, assistant professor of fashion at Stephens College, will receive the first Exceptional Fashion Educator Award from Rightfully Sewn, a not-for-profit program. The Kansas City non-profit provides seamstress training for at-risk women as well as professional development opportunities for young designers and individuals considering a career in fashion design. Carlo will be honored during the program’s inaugural Golden Gala at 7 p.m., Dec. 2 in The Grand Hall at Power & Light in Kansas City, Mo.

Stephens Life, a student-run magazine, has once again come home a winner from the national College Media Convention. Among the many accolades, the Associated College Press (ACP) recognized Stephens Life as a Pacemaker Award winner. The Pacemaker is considered the Pulitzer Prize of collegiate publications. The winners were announced during the convention, which was held Oct. 25-29 in Dallas.

The Stephens College School of Design has invited New York designers Stan Herman and Michael Harlan Schwarz to share their experience creating “Designer Uniforms” – think Federal Express and JetBlue Airlines – and how they integrated the concepts of function and form into their own lines of accessories and apparel.

Stephens College is pleased to announce that the college will be the exclusive college partner for Kansas City Fashion Week, providing students, faculty and alumnae unique opportunities to participate in the premier runway show. Among those opportunities is a chance for select fashion students to submit portfolios of designs to Project Runway alumni Michael Drummond and Joshua Christensen. The award-winning designer will critique the sketches and select a winner to show her collection in the spring 2018 KCFW.

Hollywood star Joan Crawford and costume designer Adrian Adolph Greenberg were the dynamic fashion duo of the 1930s and 1940s. Greenberg, who was known simply as “Adrian” in the fashion world, helped create Crawford’s signature broad-shouldered look, a design crafted to conceal the actress’s naturally broad shoulders.

Stephens Life, the student magazine of Stephens College, is on a roll. For the second time in less than a month, the magazine has been nominated for a national award. This time, the Associated College Press (ACP) nominated the “Eat” story in the Fall 2016 issue for Design of the year in the Yearbook/Magazine Page/Spread category.

Designing company uniforms is tougher than you might imagine: It’s not just about fashion, but function and image, too. One of the industries leading designers of “image apparel” will be at Stephens College later this month. Caroline Bartek, who recently redesigned uniforms for Southwest Airlines, will be visiting the School of Design on Friday, Sept. 29 to critique the designs of the contemporary sportswear class. The critique will take place from 11:00 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Davis Art Gallery.
