The Jeannene Booher Fashion Lecture Series continues to bring world-renowned designers to the Stephens College campus. This March the Stephens community had the pleasure to hear from Victor Costa, “king of the copycats,” whose significant impact on the fashion industry spans seven decades. Complementing the lecture, the Stephens College Costume Museum and Research Library launched a new gallery exhibit showcasing Costa’s work during his many years as a major fashion influencer and designer.

On March 5, Houston-based fashion designer Victor Costa, who is known as the “king of the copycats,” visited Stephens College fashion classes. Stephens students had the opportunity to talk with and share their fashion collections with the famed designer.

Renowned New York fashion designer Victor Costa to talk as part of Jeannene Booher Fashion Lecture Series

The Stephens College School of Design has invited famed New York fashion designer Victor Costa to present a free public lecture on March 5 as part of The Jeannene Booher Fashion Lecture Series. Costa is known as the “king of the copycats” and has been called the “maestro copier” by Vogue magazine. As post-World War II American fashion hungered for Parisian style, Costa’s photographic memory and passionate love of fashion allowed him to translate what he saw on the European runway into affordable pieces for the U.S. market. His “copycat” ability made Costa into a multi-million-dollar business.

Stephens duo receives prestigious YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund scholarships

Two Stephens College fashion students—one for the second consecutive year—are among the 226 recipients nationwide of the highly competitive 2018 YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund (FSF) scholarships. Each student will receive $5,000 from the YMA FSF, which is the fashion industry’s leading educational nonprofit, granting the largest sum of money and total number of scholarships.

Associate Professor Kirsteen Buchanan ’83 and Assistant Professor Lisa Lenoir, both in the School of Design, recently spoke about trends and concepts in wearable technology with journalism students at the University of Missouri. Their presentation was part of a series of informational sessions to help student teams prepare for the 2017-2018 RJI Student Competition, sponsored by the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism.

Assistant Professor Stephanie Carlo to be honored as Exceptional Fashion Educator

Stephanie Carlo, assistant professor of fashion at Stephens College, will receive the first Exceptional Fashion Educator Award from Rightfully Sewn, a not-for-profit program. The Kansas City non-profit provides seamstress training for at-risk women as well as professional development opportunities for young designers and individuals considering a career in fashion design. Carlo will be honored during the program’s inaugural Golden Gala at 7 p.m., Dec. 2 in The Grand Hall at Power & Light in Kansas City, Mo.

Best in Show among honors received as Stephens Life earns more design awards

Stephens Life, a student-run magazine, has once again come home a winner from the national College Media Convention. Among the many accolades, the Associated College Press (ACP) recognized Stephens Life as a Pacemaker Award winner. The Pacemaker is considered the Pulitzer Prize of collegiate publications. The winners were announced during the convention, which was held Oct. 25-29 in Dallas.
