Broadway star directs ‘Mamma Mia!’ production

Stephens College theatre students had the unique opportunity to work with Broadway actor Jennifer Hemphill for the Playhouse Company production of “Mamma Mia!” in September. Hemphill, who is an assistant professor of musical theatre and coordinator of musical theatre at Stephens, directed, choreographed and acted in the hit musical.

The Fall 2018 issue of Stephens Life has been recognized by the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) for having some of the best designs among collegiate publications in the United States and Canada this year. The magazine as a whole was named one of 24 Pacemaker finalists in the feature/general interest division.

KANSAS CITY - For the 10th-consecutive year, Stephens has been named a NAIA Champions of Character Five-Star Institution, the national office announced Tuesday. The Stars earned 89 points and a silver-level distinction for the third-consecutive year.

Aurola Wedman Alfaro ’20 takes women’s leadership seriously. In addition to her studies in fashion communication and digital filmmaking at Stephens, she is the visual information intern at Truman VA hospital, the editor-in-chief of Stephens Life, diversity chair of the Student Government Association and vice president of scholarship for Phi Theta Kappa.

On Aug. 12, Stephens College welcomed to campus 41 student-athletes from three sports (cross country, soccer and volleyball). Stars coaches and returning student-athletes helped 21 newcomers move in to the residence halls ahead of the start of preseason camps. New Student Move-In Day is Aug. 16, which is followed by three more days of orientation. Returning students arrive on campus on Aug. 18 with classes beginning on Aug. 20.

On May 10, the official Stephens College Class of 2019 photo (shown above) was taken during rehearsal for the Undergraduate Commencement ceremony, which took place the next day on Stephens’ Historic Quadrangle for the first time in decades. The Graduate & Online Commencement ceremony was held in the Kimball Ballroom of Lela Raney Wood Hall on May 10 as well. Over 130 degrees were awarded during the two ceremonies on May 10-11.

‘Tampsen Air,’ a Stephens produced film, nominated for Best TV Pilot by New York City Independent Film Festival
