On Feb. 1, Stephens College held a grand opening for the Black Cultural Resource Center (BCRC), located on the second floor of the Hugh Stephens Library. The BCRC, which opened last semester, serves as a resource center for information on black culture. It features a book collection of over 130 books and also offers comfortable seating for studying and meetings.

Public safety agencies to partner with Stephens College to practice preparedness for active assailant event

The Columbia Police Department, in partnership with Stephens College, the Columbia Fire Department, and the University of Missouri Ambulance Service is coordinating a full-scale active assailant exercise on Wednesday, Feb. 28 from 6-9 p.m. on the Stephens College campus.

Stephen Brotebeck named new OST artistic director

Okoboji Summer Theatre (OST), Stephens College’s summer-stock theatre in Spirit Lake, Iowa, has announced Stephen Brotebeck as artistic director. Resident actor Rob Doyen, a longtime Stephens theatre arts professor, also will serve this summer as associate artistic director.

School of Creative and Performing Arts takes ‘Traces in the Wind’ on road to Arizona

Dr. Gail Humphries Mardirosian, dean of the School of Creative and Performing Arts, has long believed in the power of theater for social change. She hopes her musical staged reading “Traces in the Wind,” a tribute to three women who survived the Holocaust through the sustenance of their art, will do just that when it is performed from Jan. 19-20 for high school students and community members in Peoria, Ariz. The cast of Stephens alumnae have already performed the tone poem of remembrance twice in Washington, D.C., debuting at the International Psychoanalytical Conference and shown again at the Embassy of the Czech Republic.

Stephens duo receives prestigious YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund scholarships

Two Stephens College fashion students—one for the second consecutive year—are among the 226 recipients nationwide of the highly competitive 2018 YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund (FSF) scholarships. Each student will receive $5,000 from the YMA FSF, which is the fashion industry’s leading educational nonprofit, granting the largest sum of money and total number of scholarships.
