Stephens singers bring home awards from three-state voice competition

November 1, 2017

Three Stephens College singers took home prizes during a three-state event hosted by the National Association of Teachers of Singers (NATS) Central Region on Oct. 28-29.

Sicily Mathenia, a senior, received First Place in the Upper College Women Musical Theatre category while Freshman Natalie Irlmeier, and Sophomore Mackenna Morrow took home Second and Third places respectively in the Lower College Women Musical Theatre category. Each winner received a certificate and a cash award.

“These experiences certainly enrich our students’ learning,” said. Pam Ellsworth-Smith, associate professor of voice at Stephens.

All total, six students attended the competition in DeKalb, Illinois, including Senior Catera Combs, Freshman Fiona Bolte-Bradhurst and Sophomore Tanneal Cheshire. Anthony Hernandez was their accompanist.

Founded in 1944, the NATS is the largest association of teachers of singing in the world. The Central Region is one of 14 regions in the country and serves members in the states of Illinois, Iowa and Missouri.

The annual Central Region Conference and Student Auditions are held in the fall and offers members and their students an opportunity to connect with colleagues across the region while attending presentations, master classes, the teacher’s topical breakfast meeting and through auditions. Students perform and receive written feedback about their performances. They also meet and hear other singers while NATS teachers get to know their colleagues better and everyone hears a variety of songs.
