Faculty, students and retired astronaut Dr. Linda Godwin will present during a free virtual conference on April 16.

Stephens College, a leader in health sciences education, welcomes all those interested in the sciences and health sciences to our virtual spring research conference. Students and faculty in Stephens’ undergraduate and graduate programs will share their research in a wide range of specialties. Keynote speaker and retired astronaut Dr. Linda Godwin will discuss the history and future of women in spaceflight.

“We are excited to provide a platform for faculty and students in all areas within our School of Health Sciences — biology, counseling, equestrian studies, health information management, health science, human development, physician assistant studies and psychology — to come together and share their research and scholarly work,” said Dr. Julia A. Moffitt, dean of the School of Health Sciences. “We look forward to welcoming the broader community to the conversation as well.”

Moffitt, an expert on physiology, pharmacology and behavior and a named inventor on more than 20 U.S. and European patents, will present a keynote address on her more than two decades of engaging students in research around the autonomic nervous system.

Godwin, a Missouri native, joined NASA in 1980 and became an astronaut in July 1986. She retired in 2010. During her career, she completed four space flights and logged more than 38 days in space. Godwin also served as the assistant to the director for exploration, flight crew operations directorate at the Johnson Space Center. Today, Godwin is a University of Missouri professor emeritus of physics and astronomy.
