Fewer than 15% of skilled workers in high-demand trades are women. We're here to change that.

COLUMBIA, MO – August 8, 2024 – Stephens College officially launched the Missouri Women Who Work - Women in Trades program today with a ceremonial ribbon cutting, attended by the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Boone County Commissioners, key program partners, and community and state leaders.

Dr. Scott Taylor, Stephens College Dean of Workforce Development and Continuing Education, welcomed attendees. "We are thrilled to introduce the Missouri Women Work-Women in Trades program at Stephens College, furthering our commitment to fostering inclusivity and diversity in all aspects of education," said Taylor. "By providing women with the resources and support they need to succeed in traditionally male-dominated trades, we are not only breaking down barriers but also opening doors to new opportunities and pathways to economic empowerment."

The initiative has already seen its first cohort graduate, all of whom secured job offers.

Successful program graduate Avery Throckmorton, also a recent 2024 Stephens College graduate, participated in the trades program following her college graduation and a challenging job search.  She praised the program for opening new career pathways for women. Throckmorton shared, "Enrolling in the Missouri Women Work-Women in Trades program was the best decision I ever made. It not only gave me the practical skills I needed but also renewed my confidence and sense of purpose. I now have a fulfilling career that I am passionate about and the opportunity to make a real difference in my community."

The program's second cohort is in training now, getting hands-on experience in general carpentry onsite at local Habitat for Humanity builds.
