Stephens literary magazine, Harbinger, has won second place in Sigma Tau Delta’s Literary Arts Journal Category for its 2022 issue. Sigma Tau Delta is a national English honor society, and several Stephens students are members of the Alpha Epsilon Eta chapter.

Harbinger has won first place for this award seven times, with the most recent being in 2020.

Associate Professor of English and Creative Writing Kris Somerville credits the success of Harbinger to the blend of fine production value and quality editorial content.

“It has a successful mix of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, and literary interviews,” Somerville said “The theme that arrives out of the content does a wonderful job of making the magazine a cohesive, entertaining read.”

The Harbinger internship gives students a chance to write, edit, and design their own magazine issue each year. The students at Stephens are immersed in the world of literary magazine publishing and many of the magazine’s former interns and editors go on to work in commercial and boutique publishing.
