Conservatory Assistant Professor elevates young talents at IGNITE Musical Theatre Summer Intensive, preparing future performers.

Darren Gibson, Assistant Professor of Dance in the Conservatory for the Performing Arts at Stephens College, spent part of his summer teaching at the IGNITE Musical Theatre Summer Intensive, held at Missouri State University. Just in time for the Fall 2024 semester to begin, he has returned to campus.

The IGNITE program is focused on preparing young performers for college auditions and careers in musical theatre. It offers training in acting, voice, and dance, with a curriculum designed to help students improve their performance skills. Gibson played a significant role in the program as a professional Guest Artist and Director of Dance, applying his expertise to help students refine their talents. IGNITE is known for its intensive training environment and the opportunity it provides for students to work with professionals in the field.

As the first graduate of The New Ballet School (at the age of 16), Gibson became a principal dancer and ballet master while also serving on the board of directors. He also staged ballets for Richmond Ballet and Boston Ballet, and assisted Ann Reinking for the American Ballet Theatre. He appeared as a featured performer in George C. Wolfe’s New York Shakespeare Festival production and Broadway revival of On the Town, and Twyla Tharp’s Movin’ Out.  Gibson was an assistant choreographer for The Look of Love, choreographed by Ann Reinking, and was an original cast member in the first national tour of Fosse. He was a featured performer and resident director/choreographer in London West End's production of Fosse and Movin’ Out.  Other credits include City Center Encores: House of FlowersNo Strings! and the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular.
