Students in Stephens College's BUS171 Foundations of Business course recently took their learning beyond the classroom with an immersive visit to Columbia Regional Economic Development Inc. (REDI). This hands-on experience highlighted the real-world applications of economic theories and business principles, providing students with a deeper understanding of regional economic development.
At REDI, students saw firsthand how business strategies are implemented to foster regional growth, gaining insights into challenges and opportunities faced by local businesses. The visit also offered invaluable networking opportunities, allowing students to connect with local economic development professionals, including Trish Koetting, Entrepreneurship Specialist, and Lisa Driskel Hawxby, Business Development Specialist. These connections could pave the way for future internships, mentorships, and job opportunities.
REDI's work in attracting and retaining businesses provided students with a broader perspective on economic development strategies, inspiring many to consider entrepreneurial ventures of their own. Student Allison Glen noted, "I left REDI with so much new information. The resources they offer made me rethink pursuing something in business in the future."
Students were particularly struck by REDI's mission to support local entrepreneurs and create quality job opportunities. "REDI’s mission reflects how they impact the community and support economic development strategies," said student AJ Hanninen.
The experience also deepened students' understanding of how businesses contribute to the quality of life in a community. As Kiara Mounts observed, "Supporting local businesses doesn't just help them thrive; it also enhances the entire community's quality of life."
This collaboration with REDI, made possible by Stephens College's innovative block schedule, exemplifies the college’s commitment to providing students with experiential learning opportunities that prepare them for successful careers in business and beyond.
