Stephens Summer Dance

The Stephens College Dance B.F.A. program is a 3-year/2-summer program. The program combines well-rounded study during the academic year with intensive dance-focused summer experiences.

Summer (1) Professional Summer Stock Theatre Experience

Okoboji Summer Theatre is a professional summer stock theatre owned by the College and based in beautiful Spirit Lake, Iowa.

This intensive 10-week comprehensive summer program allows students to improve their marketability and make industry connections and includes opportunities to:

  • Hone their craft in technique classes with OST artistic director and dance professional Stephen Brotebeck
  • Serve as dance captain for a mainstage production
  • Dance in 3-4 musicals each season
  • Take master classes in auditioning
  • Work alongside renowned choreographers
  • Work with a wide range of seasoned professionals, performing arts students and guest artists
  • Gain valuable hands-on experience in related disciplines like technical theatre (scenic and costume shop), front of house and box office management (thereby expanding industry knowledge and marketability)
  • Perform in front of loyal patrons who have come to OST for generations

Summer (2) Independent Study

Summer 2 prepares students for success by tailoring their experience to reflect their strengths and goals. Students work with a faculty advisor to develop a plan. Examples could include taking on a new challenge or focusing on a preferred style of dance at an outside intensive program, or exploring an internship that involves teaching or choreography.

Faculty advisers will work with students to tailor a plan and to connect students with programs, industry professionals and working alumnae to ensure a career-building and personally rewarding experience.
