What is a Standardized Patient?

A Standardized Patient is trained to simulate in a standardized manner, a patient in a medical situation. Standardized Patients help to to train and evaluate physician assistant students. Standardized Patients help students learn by portraying a real medical case and allowing the student to practice interviewing and examination skills. Common examinations include listening to your heart and lungs with a stethoscope; pressing on your abdomen looking for tenderness or swellings, eye exams, ear exams, oral exams, blood pressure checks, assessing muscle strength, evaluating reflexes, checking pulses, etc. No sensitive examinations are practiced.
