Who is Fred Meyers? Is he a celebrity? A friend? A hero?
In the eyes of his daughter, he is all of the above and more.
A few years ago, Fred Meyers was caught in a situation that resulted in the loss of his life to keep his family safe. His daughter, Kayla Meyers, was devastated. Having been a “daddy’s girl,” she couldn’t believe she’d lost the most important person in her life.
“My dad is my motivation,” Meyers said. “He told me to live life to the fullest.”
Having come to Columbia from St. Louis, Mo., Meyers has been through what most women going off to college haven’t even thought about.
Today she attends Stephens, majoring in fashion communication. As of now, she has no specific goals but continues to pursue her education.
“My education is most important to me. He told me that education is the most important thing and that no one can take it away from you,” Meyers said.
She chose Stephens because it was close to home and offered the program she was most interested in studying. Meyers’ cousin also studied fashion communication when she attended Stephens, and has since graduated.
Meyers has many hobbies, taking classes in dance and piano, playing soccer and modeling. She is a strong, fun, kind and talented young woman who enjoys doing new things in new ways. A typical day consists of classes, homework and friends, something she considers “boring.”
When asked what advice she has for fellow students, she said, “If you want something, go for it. There’s no point in wasting time.”
With her dad as her inspiration, she strives through every day to the best of her ability and has become just as big of an inspiration to us all.
