Robin Williams addresses his students in the movie “Dead Poets Society” with this: “Avoid using the word ‘very’ because it’s lazy… Language was invented for one reason, boys- to woo women- and, in that endeavor, laziness will not do.” While the club may not be wooing women, or count Williams as a member, the Dead Writers Society at Stephens is dedicated to the discussion and promotion of the language arts.
Freshman Shelly Romero recently added the book club to Stephens’ list of student organizations. Members of the Dead Writers Society discuss their favorite classics or books they would like to read in the future that relate to each week’s theme. Romero says, “(Here, we) do not bash books. We find out why we think they’re good and why we think they’re bad.”
In their first meeting, the members of the Dead Writers Society discussed and voted upon what book was best turned into a movie. The winner of the contest will be shown in the student union, and non-members are invited to the viewing to earn community engagement points. While the viewing will be a positive first step, Shelly believes that students can expect more opportunities to earn engagement points through the club. When asked why she wanted to join, secretary Mikayla Hendrickson, freshman, stated that she was interested in the themes dedicated to each meeting. She also believes that this club is not only for book lovers but also for women with opinions. If you love to debate and discuss, this is the perfect club for you. Romero hopes that as word of the Dead Writers Society spreads around, the organization will grow.
The club implements an open door policy, meaning that interested students may attend one meeting, every other meeting or every single meeting, depending on the student’s schedule. A meeting schedule is posted on the “Stephens Entering Class of 2013” and “Stephens Class of 2017” Facebook pages with dates and times. The organization meets twice a month at 7-8:30 p.m., with meeting dates varying from Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The officers encourage interested students to grab their favorite books, check out their schedule on Facebook and join Stephens’ Dead Writers Society.
