Stephens Life, the student-run newspaper on campus, has a television show on Columbia Access Television. The show is appropriately named “ON IT! With Stephens Life.” Students write their own stories and report them in a broadcast news setting. The students, from the advanced news writing and production class, use the CAT studios to film parts of the show.
The student works hands-on with equipment and scripts to produce the show. Students are directly involved with the production of each broadcast. The class prepares students and gives them work experience.
Angel Mendez, junior integrated media major, credits “ON IT!” for giving her the opportunity to work in broadcast journalism at Stephens.
“I have experience working as a producer, reporter, anchor, photographer and video editor, which will make me a well-rounded candidate when it comes to applying for jobs after graduation,” she said.
Since its debut in January, “ON IT!” has accumulated an impressive fan base. President Dianne Lynch and Vice President for Academic Affairs Annette Digby are both recurring viewers of the show.
Digby enjoys the show for its personal touch. She said that she can see the teamwork that goes into each broadcast. She also said that these students have an advantage from the learning and work experience from Stephens Life and “ON IT!”
“ON IT!” has given media students the chance to get a feel for broadcast journalism and has presented the opportunity to grow as journalists and students.
