Legally Blonde showcases student, canine talents
Stephens Senior Shinah Brashears will shine as Elle in the upcoming production of Legally Blonde: The Musical, fellow cast member Allison Frisch says—but she also knows Gertie might steal the show.
Gertie is the 4-year-old Chihuahua portraying Bruiser, the Chihuahua that heads off to Harvard in the comfort of Elle’s designer handbag. Legally Blonde: The Musical adds a fast-paced, upbeat score to the story of a heartbroken sorority socialite who chases her ex-beau to law school and has surprising success there.
“This musical is for everyone,” Guest Director and Choreographer Millie Garvey said. “The numbers will bring smiles to your face and it is an upbeat, happy-ending musical about not judging a book by its cover and staying true to yourself.”
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. April 26-27, 2 p.m. April 28 and 7:30 p.m. May 1-3 at Macklanburg Playhouse.
Stephens chose Legally Blonde because of the strong female roles and because it shows off “triple threat” theatre students—those who can sing, dance and act. You can even expect Gertie to appear in one of the large group performances. Allison is training her to run to Elle in the middle of the song and leap into her arms. That’s impressive considering several months ago, Gertie had never been out of a kennel. She and Maude, the understudy Chihuahua, are former breeder dogs that Allison began fostering from Second Chance about two months ago. In addition to getting them ready for their stage debuts, she’s had to teach them the basics: Sitting, speaking on command, even walking up stairs.
“They weren’t used to a leash, wouldn’t talk and were scared of everything,” Allison said. “But I’ve seen big improvements.”
Audience members will also catch a glimpse of Allison’s own dog, Lily, who will appear as Rufus in the production. While they might not see Maude on stage, guests will have a chance to meet and adopt her. At 6:45 p.m. Friday, May 3, Second Chance is hosting an adoption event in conjunction with the production.
Gertie is up for adoption, too, and after the performance, Allison expects the Chihuahua to be in high demand. While Maude is the “sweetest thing ever,” Allison said, any Elle Woods-wannabes out there will likely be drawn to Gertie.
“Gertie is a diva,” Allison said. “She’s such a little princess.”
