Last week, I got a phone call from our admissions office—a journalism student was roaming around the Stephens College campus and no one was quite sure what to do with him.
“Doesn’t this happen all the time?” the confused University of Missouri sophomore asked me.
It does not. But it was a fair question. With a city so full of reporters and aspiring reporters, one would think a couple would take the time to check out Stephens.
He spent an hour with me, touring campus and asking important questions: What does Stephens contribute to the community and society as a whole? Who comes to Stephens and why?
And now, I’m embarrassed to say, this sophomore journalism student conducting a class project officially knows more about Stephens than I ever did as a professional reporter covering higher education for the Columbia Daily Tribune.
In fact, this sophomore journalism student probably knows more about Stephens than any higher education reporter in town.
That’s why we’re launching a new news blog that will keep our community and campus up to speed on all things Stephens. I know first hand that reporters covering higher education in this town have their hands full and can’t get around to everything. That doesn’t mean the community shouldn’t know more about Stephens.
Many of these stories first appear on our website, so if you’re used to visiting our home page daily, you might see some duplication. But there will be additional stories from campus posted there, too. Mainly, it’s a way for Stephens to share its news with community members who aren’t necessarily interested in the other features and sections of our official website.
So if you’re still visiting this blog, thanks – and now you’re first in the community to know about our new news site, www.sc-scene.com. (Well, except for a sophomore journalism student.)
