Dial-up Services
Introduction
Stephens provides dial-up remote access for students, faculty, and staff that currently don't subscribe to an Internet Service Provider, such as, AOL, Socket, Compuserve, etc. If you currently subscribe to an Internet Service Provider then please continue to use it, so that Stephens users will experience unnecessary busy signals.
Analog modems up to 56KB and ISDN digital modems are supported. Any connection that is idle for more than 10 minutes will be disconnected. Please do not stay connected for more than two hours or you may be disconnected.

How to Create a Dial-Up Connection in Windows 95/98
There are different releases and versions of Windows 95/98. As a result, some of the following instructions may vary slightly, but the basic information should be the same except where noted. Before you start, make sure you have your User Name and Password, which is the same as your e-mail user name and password.
Installing Network Components
Click the Start button and select Settings and then Control Panel. Double-click Network. The following network components must be installed:
- Client for Microsoft Networks or Microsoft Family Logon
- Dial-Up Adapter
- TCP/IP or TCP/IP Dial-Up Adapter
The primary Network Logon should be Client for Microsoft Networks or Microsoft Family Logon if either is listed as an installed network component.
If one or more of the above listed network components isn't installed then please follow the directions below for installing them; otherwise, go to Configuring Dial-Up Networking.
Client for Microsoft Networks or Microsoft Family Logon
1. Click on Add. Select Client. Click on Add.
2. Choose Microsoft from the Manufacturers list.
3. Click on Client for Microsoft Networks or Microsoft Family Logon and then click OK.
Dial-up Adapter
1. Click on Add. Select Adapter. Click on Add.
2. Choose Microsoft from the Manufacturers list.
3. Click on Dial-Up Adapter and then click on OK.
TCP/IP Protocol
1. Click on Add. Select Protocol. Click on Add.
2. Choose Microsoft from the Manufacturers list.
3. Click on TCP/IP and then click on OK.
Please Note: If any of these components are installed then DO NOT add another copy. Multiple copies will cause problems with your connection.
Configuring Dial-up Networking
Double click on My Computer. Double click the Dial-Up Networking folder. If the Dial-Up Networking folder doesn't exist then skip to section on Installing Dial-Up Networking.
- If Dial-Up Networking has never been used then a Connection Wizard may appear. If the Wizard does not appear then click on the Make a New Connection icon. If the modem has never been used then Windows 95/98 may ask to configure the modem. Just follow the steps to find and configure your modem.
- When asked for the name of the connection, type Stephens in the space provided. Click Next
- Off-campus users use a different phone number than on-campus users. Please call ITT for the correct number. Enter the phone number and Click Next and then click Finish to complete the new connection. An icon labeled Stephens will appear in the Dial-Up Networking window.
- Highlight the new icon by clicking on it once. Click File and select Properties or right click once on the new icon and select properties.
- Click the Server Type tab or button. Click the arrow to the right of the Type of Dial-Up Server box. Select “PPP: Windows 95/98, Windows NT 3.5, Internet” or “PPP: Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98” from the options. CHECK Log on to Network. CHECK Enable Software Compression. CHECK TCP/IP. All other boxes should be unchecked.
- Click theTCP/IP Settings button. Select Server assigned IP address. Select Server assigned name server addresses. CHECK Use IP header compression. CHECK Use default gateway on remote network.
Installing Dial-up Networking
- Click the Start button on your task bar and go to Settings and Control Panel. Double click on Add/Remove Programs. Click on the Windows Setup tab near the top of the window.
- Click once on Communications to highlight it and then click on the Detail button.
- Click the Dial-Up Networking check box so that a check mark appears. Click the OK button. Insert the Windows 95/98 system cd or diskette if prompted.
- Click the OK button until you are out of Add/Remove Programs. This will install the software needed to make a PPP (point to point protocol) connection through Stephens. If you are asked to restart your computer, you can save some time by clicking NO. You can do this later.
Now You Are Ready to Connect
If you have followed the instruction from above the you are ready to connect to the Internet. Open the Dial-Up Networking folder from My Computer and double click on the Stephens icon to start the dial-up connection. After a connection is made then you will be prompted to enter your User Name and Password, which is the same as your E-Mail user name and password. If you have successfully logged on then you are ready to browse the Internet or accesss your Stephens e-mail via the web. How to Create a Dial-Up Connection in Windows XP
- From the Start menu, choose Control Panel.
- Click the Network and Internet Connections icon.
- Set up or change your Internet connection
- Click the Setup button.
- Click the Next button.
- Select Connect to the Internet.
- Click the Next button.
- Select Set up my connection manually.
- Click the Next button.
- Select Connect using a dial-up modem.
- Click the Next button.
- In the ISP Name field, type a name to identify your connection (ie. Stephens).
- Click the Next button.
- In the Phone number field, type your local access number (4200 for on campus students) exactly as it needs to be dialed.
- Click the Next button.
- In the User name field, type your dialup account username. (This should be the same as your e-mail account user name.)
- In the Password field, type your dialup account password. (This could be different than your e-mail password.)
- In the Confirm password field, type your password.
- Uncheck the box next to Use this account name and password when anyone connects to the Internet from this computer.
- Uncheck the box next to Make this the default Internet connection.
- Uncheck the box next to Turn on Internet Connection Firewall for this connection.
- Click the Next button.
- Check the box next to Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop if you wish to have a shortcut to the connection on your desktop.
- Click the Finish button.
You have successfully created a Dial-up Connection in Windows XP.
