Job Title: Equestrian Counselor
Department: Camp Program
Reports to: Barn Manager
Position Summary: Working with staff and volunteers to
develop, plan and implement programming that is safe, age appropriate and
empowering in a medically and emotionally safe environment for children
ages seven to fifteen that have been diagnosed with a life threatening illness.
Duties and Responsibilities:
To be responsible for the care and safety of all campers and counselors in the barn activity area.
To assist in providing an equestrian program that is educational, enjoyable and appropriate for each camper session.
To assist in maintaining and managing all aspects of the equestrian activity program.
To be willing to learn to tack up and groom horses properly.
To assist in carrying out feed schedule, daily cleaning of stalls and daily grooming and turn out of horses.
To assist in organizing barn and keeping stalls and tack room orderly.
To perform all barn duties in a timely fashion.
To assist in organizing an orientation program and training staff in program procedures.
To coordinate and schedule any special events with the Program Area Coordinators and Entertainment Coordinator, taking into account the abilities and disabilities of each participant.
To assist in documenting and managing all aspects of health, safety and risk management of the equestrian program.
To enforce rules, procedures and behavior as pertains to the equestrian program area.
To work closely with the Barn Manager, leadership team, counselors and medical staff regarding all aspects of program development and management.
To work closely with other program areas in developing and implementing rainy day activity plans.
To assist in preparing the program area for the opening and closing of each session.
To actively participate and facilitate all other day and evening programs as required by the Program Area Coordinators and Entertainment Coordinator.
To assist in the evaluation of the current season and make recommendations for equipment, supplies and programs for the following season.
To be an active member of your lodge so that you may participate in the overall experience of camp life. All meals should be taken with your assigned den. Whenever you are not engaged in an activity or planning, you should join in the activities of your den.
To attend to mild personal care needs of campers when necessary, including some changing, showering and transferring as needed.
To report any staff behavior that poses a potentially negative impact on the well being of other staff or the camp community.
To be responsible for knowing and adhering to the policies and procedures contained within the camp manual.
To participate in all staff training.
To perform any duties deemed necessary by the Camp Director.
Physical Elements

Qualifications:
Must be at least 19 years of age or 18 years of age with a year of college.
Must be able to accept supervision and guidance.
Must have the ability to communicate and train staff and campers in safety regulations and emergency procedures.
Must have visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other health hazards related to the activity.
Must have physical ability to perform all duties and responsibilities related to the activity area.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
Must have relevant supervision and leadership experience in related field (preferably camp).
Must have the cognitive and communication skills to plan and conduct activities to achieve camper development objectives.
Must have current CPR certification.
Camp Courageous
Camp Courageous
of Iowa is a year-round recreational and respite
care facility for individuals with disabilities. Campers with mental
and physical disabilities, brain injuries, hearing or visual impairments,
autism, ADD and other special needs are served.
Working with children and adults with special needs is often a very real
challenge.
Campers may need help with personal care including feeding, dressing, and
personal care.
Some campers exhibit behavior problems. Patience, energy, good judgment
and
enthusiasm are important qualifications for a position at Camp Courageous.
The hours are
long. An unselfish attitude and an emphasis on teamwork are needed. Staff
are expected to
put the campers’ needs before their own. If you possess the necessary
attributes, I invite

Volunteer positions, internships, and paid positions are available. Volunteers
and interns
can receive an optional stipend of $25.00/week plus room and board, and
a restricted
medical plan.
Paid counselors and activity specialists receive the best employment package
around.
Seasonal staff earn $330/week while year-round staff earn $430-460-/week.
Room and
board are provided which include air-conditioned staff dormitories affording
the staff
separate living quarters from the campers. Staff share cabin duty on a rotating
basis. Other
benefits include a restricted medical plan for seasonal staff and health
insurance and one
week of paid vacation for year-round staff. Camp provides a bonus for returning
seasonal
summer staff and a monetary incentive for recruiting additional staff.
Candidates for year-round positions must have experience with individuals
with
disabilities. Seasonal positions are for one or more season.
