"Nunsense II"—Family
Musical
June 17-22
What an opener! This is one that needs no introduction. For our
51st season we wanted to begin with a play that was second to
"Godspell" in audience requests. So, it’s back,
and it has the amazing Lamby Hedge as Mother Superior! Grab your
children, your friends, and just anyone you know who loves to laugh
and help OST kick off a summer to remember.
"The Diviners" —Sentimental
June 24-29
This enchanting story centers around a special young man and his
relationship with a traveling preacher in Indiana around the
early 1930s. Beth Leonard directs an unbelievably talented
cast. Together they will bring the poetry and feeling of human
relationships to the OST stage. It’s a beautiful,
moving play that combines humor and pathos so well that critics
have simply said, “Compelling, something not to miss.” An OST
premiere.
"Maybe Baby, It's You" —Adult Comedy
July 1-6
Buckle up for this fast-paced comedy about the ultimate search
for a soul mate. This play has been called "a raucous ride through
male-female relationships." We encounter the horrors of blind
dates, a brain surgeon who is always "Mr. Wrong," an elderly
divorced couple who try to stand each other for their grandson’s soccer
game, and a whole list of other would-be or shouldn’t-be couples.
Make a date to join us over the Fourth of July week for a truly
American chuckle.
"Leaving Iowa" —Comedy
July 8-13
A brand new play that not only is an OST premiere, but one of the
first few productions in the country. This is a comedy about
family vacations. It’s a memory play where a young man relives moments
from his youth when the family would pile into the car and visit
places like Mount Union,
Iowa. There can be no one in America who doesn’t recall those long,
but wonderful days in the car, with Mom humming, Dad missing
the turnoff and the kids fighting. Be the first one on your block,
heck your state,
to see this special play.
"The 1940s Radio Hour" —Musical
July 15-20
This enchanting musical takes place at a live broadcast of The
Mutual Manhattan Variety Cavalcade from the Hotel Astor’s Algonquin
Room on Dec. 21, 1942. The theatre will be filled with the spirit
and songs of that bygone era when the world was at war and pop
music meant “Strike
Up the Band” and “Boogie-Woogie Bugle-Boy.”
The New
York Daily News said, “It’s an exhilarating evening of
singing, dancing and fun.” Get your tickets now!
"Quality Street" —Period Comedy
July 22-27
If you love the story of Peter Pan, then you must see this lovely
play. It is written by the same playwright, James M. Barrie,
and has all the same atmosphere of lightness and fantasy. The costumes
will be worth
the price of the ticket alone, but the story of the gamin “Phoebe
of the ringlets” will captivate you for years to come. "Quality
Street" has very much the feel of "Pride and Prejudice"
and every bit the happiest of endings!
"Enter Laughing" —Farce
July 29-Aug. 3
Yes, it’s a farce, but it’s just as sweet as it can be. Based
on the novel by Carl Reiner, this story introduces us to David, who is frantic
to become an actor. Frantic is a perfect word as we follow him through auditions
and the actual moment when he says his first line. We might need to put
a warning sign in our lobby, because the New York Times reported that the
opening night of this play the audience was “convulsed with laughter.” Since
laughing isn’t hazardous to your health, take a risk and join us for
a riotous romp about a boy whose parents would prefer he become a druggist!
"Doubt" —Adult Contemporary
Aug. 5-10
OST proudly presents the 2005 Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and
the Tony Award. The play is set in 1964 but the subject matter
couldn’t
be more timely. It is a gripping mystery and exquisitely written.
We don’t
doubt that this will be a play that audiences will remember and
continue to talk about for days to come. It is the most sophisticated
production this season and an experience that is viewed as “important
and engrossing.” In
just 90 fast-moving minutes, these blazing characters come
alive and carry you along with them.
"The Secret Garden" —Family
Musical
Aug. 12-17
This enchanting class of children’s literature is now a brilliant
musical by the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Marsha Norman. It is the
story of an 11 year-old girl, orphaned in India and returned to Yorkshire
to live with an embittered uncle and his invalid son. This Tony Award-winner
is a treasure for children and adults alike. Elegant may be the only perfect
word to describe it. Come and join your applause to the inevitable standing
ovation that an irresistible musical like this brings. What better way to
close our 51st season than with one of the best American musicals of all
time.
