“Synthetic Evolution: The Rise of Polyester and Other Synthetic Fibers”
Sept. 11, 2008-Oct. 26, 2008
noon-3 p.m. Saturday-Sunday and 5:30-8:30 Thursday; Opening reception: 5:30-8:30 p.m.,
Thursday, Sept. 11
Historic Costume Gallery, mezzanine floor of Lela Raney Wood Hall, 6 N. College Ave.
Take a journey of synthetic fibers—whose timeline spans the invention of “artificial silk” rayon in the 1920s to the explosion of mass-produced polyester in the 1970s. A few war time gowns, a geometric print pantsuit, a neon pink hostess dress and a metallic jumpsuit outline the diverse collection of garments and other textile products integrated into this exhibit.
An interactive touch board allows visitors to experience the various fabric swatches. The exhibit also challenges visitors to spot the one garment that is silk and compare its appeal to the neighboring synthetic garments.
Special tours can be scheduled for groups of five or more.

10 a.m. - 3 p.m., Monday through Friday and by appointment; Opening Reception: 4-6 p.m., Oct. 3
Davis Art Gallery, corner of Ripley and Walnut Streets

Photographs by Denise McGill, a photographer and writer who has covered five continents gathering images that document the human experience. Her work has been featured in many publications, including "Christianity Today." Many of her projects focus on migration and faith issues. For several years, McGill served as an overseas correspondent for the award-winning magazine "The Commission." Major assignments included AIDS in Africa, refugees in Colombia and Muslim women.
The exhibit is being shown to highlight human dignity in contrast to human trafficking. The latter is a global issue that the College addressed during a "Not For Sale" Awareness Week in September.
Shown as part of Stephens College's 175th anniversary celebration.
