What: The rough cut premiere of "Against the Grain-Frank Stack, Contemporary Artist," by William Helvey. This documentary focuses on how art is created by highlighting Frank Stack, a well-known Midwestern contemporary artist who sells his artwork to international collectors. Ryan McNeil, a local, creative performing artist narrates the project. Several local Missouri artists and Stack's former students are featured in the film including J.D. King, Bryon Smith, Robert Freidman, Catherine Park, Tim Williams, Peter Anger and others. All relate their personal experiences with Stack. Stack inspires all creative individuals-professional and non-professional-in the process of creating a work of art. He tells artists that they can be independent and still create art to please themselves, not necessarily what society dictates.

Copies of the documentary are available for purchase. Additional showings of the film are currently being arranged with other local venues.

Note: The screening is open to the Stephens College community and the film's participants. Stack's artwork can be seen by the public during the Davis Art Gallery's next exhibit, "Body Image: Drawings from Life," which opens Nov. 10.
