Getting to Know: Barbara Scott Dawdy
A column dedicated to acquainting Stephens College faculty, staff and students.
Department/Office: Business & Marketing department
Title: Assistant Professor and MPA Degree Coordinator
Job description: I teach strategic writing, integrated marketing communications, professional communications, public relations, case studies in marketing and public relations and the business and MPA capstone. I am also the faculty advisor for the Public Relations Student Society of America and Creative Ink, the student-run advertising/PR agency.
Office location: 208 Walter Hall
Years at Stephens: This is my second semester at Stephens.
My department/office described in three words: My department: challenging, experienced and passionate My office in Walter Hall: cozy, comfortable, peaceful
Best part about my work: The best part of my job is sharing my experience and love of business, marketing and PR with my students and challenging them to become better writers ... better communicators ... better students of life. I also enjoy having more time to study industry trends and read, read, read.
Words of advice to students: If you live your life like it's all about the journey and not the destination, you'll get a lot more out of it. Don't be in such a rush to "get through" your life. Enjoy it. Live it. Fully.
Family and pets: Husband, Jeff Dawdy, who is co-owner of Joseph-Kent Construction, a construction management firm. We have two, much-loved, poodle-children, Jackson Joseph and Emma Louise. My dad (retired from UMC and a full-time fly fisherman) lives in Columbia. My mother lives in Jefferson City, as does my sister and her family.
In my spare time: I am an active supporter of community arts in Jefferson City. Off-stage I have worked as properties mistress, asst. director and asst. stage manager. On-stage, I have played roles such as Polly Baker in "Crazy for You," Gabby/Bobbi in "City of Angels,"and Meredith Parker in "Bat Boy: The Musical." I served on the board of directors for The Little Theatre of Jefferson City for several years and continue to support their communication efforts. I am a member/supporter of Capital Arts and Scene One Theatre in Jefferson City, as well as an active member of the Public Relations Society of America and Zonta International.
Favorite place in Columbia: That's easy...Stephens! Other than Stephens? Well, does Les Bourgeois Bistro count? It's not quite in Columbia, but it's a great place to spend the day/evening with friends/family.
Most people don't know: I am an artist. As much as I enjoy business, marketing and advertising, I love to center myself in a ceramics studio. I am ever-so-slowly building a studio at our house. Unfortunately, it's a very expensive "hobby," so it's taking a while... I have studied graphic design and photography for years, as well. So much to experience and enjoy in life, so little time ...

Why is CLA Important?
The CLA (Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) is a test of critical-thinking skills that Stephens gives every year to first-year students and seniors. Through CLA Stephens gets a measure of the "value added" of a Stephens education, so it's a key part of our campus-wide assessment effort. Seniors: if you've been selected for the sample group, you have received (or will soon receive) an email from Dr. Terry with an appointment date/time for your CLA session. Please watch for it and respond! Everyone who participates will have a chance to win *ultra-fabulous* incentive gifts, like a $100 Columbia Mall gift card, gift certificates for the Bookshelf, tickets to the "Nu Luxe" Spring Fashion Show, "HMS Pinafore," and the "New Works" dance concert, a free night's stay at the Guest Suites at Stephens, and lunch or dinner for you and two guest with Dr. Lynch.
