Campus Announcements
Stephens Student Spotlight
Name: Lainey Hughes

Class Year: December 2010

Major: Digital Filmmaking

Hometown:  Co. Mayo, Ireland

Family: My wonderful and very supportive parents, Jay and Delia, have been married for almost 34 years. They blessed me with four beautiful sisters: Hilary (33), Deirdre (29), Loretta (28), and Grace (21), and one very handsome brother, John (32). I also have two gorgeous and charming nieces, Isabella (20 months) and Siena (7 months).

Campus Activities: SGA Executive Board Academic Affairs Chair, RA for Hillcrest C-Wing, Stephens Success Orientation Group Leader, S.O.S. volunteer, and Member of the American Association of University Women.

I decided to attend Stephens because: Stephens is committed to producing women who are competent and confident in film production. I think the film program is fantastic here and I love the hands-on experience I get here, which I would not be so privileged to receive at a huge university.

Most enjoy about Stephens: I love the beautiful family that I have made here at Stephens. They have made me feel so welcome since the day I arrived here, and even though some have graduated, we keep in touch all of the time. Moving over here was a little daunting, but they make my life so much better. I am grateful for them every day.

Favorite place on campus/in Columbia: I love Tower Hall, as I will always think of it as my first home when I moved to Stephens.

Favorite class(es): Archival Research & Storytelling with Chad Freidrichs. I also loved my History LBA, Colonial American History.

After I graduate, I plan to: work in Human Rights documentaries. I graduate in December and I want to get a Master’s in Human Rights, but I think I'll take a little break and spent some time working on film sets before I continue with my education.

What most people don't know: I went to the same college in Ireland as Cecelia Ahern, who wrote “P.S. I Love You.” Oscar Wilde would spend his vacations in a house at the top of the hill in my village in Ireland. The house is now owned by The Edge from U2. And, in 2006, two of my siblings were married in Italy within 12 weeks of one another!

In my spare time: I become the ultimate couch potato. I watch a lot of films, hang out with friends, and eat chicken nachos in El Racho with the beautiful and vivacious, Ashley Renee Harris.

Swimmers at Nationals
Stephens sent six swimmers to the 2010 NAIA National Swimming & Diving Championships, held March 3-6 at the St. Peters Rec Plex. The Stars scored in two events, as the relay team of Annie Wolpers (FR), Lauren Holman (JR), Emily Younghouse (SR) and Kelly Adams (SO) placed 16th in both the 400 and 800 freestyle relays.  Emily Younghouse placed highest in an individual event, finishing 26th in the 1650 yard freestyle.  The team tied with Hannibal-LaGrange and Milligan College for 17th place in the meet.  Younghouse and Holman were honored as 2010 Daktroniks-NAIA Scholar Athletes at the event.

Irish Fox Stables Winter Series Horse Show
The weekend of Feb. 27-28 the hunter/jumper students participated at the Irish Fox Stables Winter Series Horse Show, a rated show, at the National Equestrian Center in St. Louis. All students were very successful in their divisions and brought home several awards. The teamwork and support from each student for the other was admirable. Their dedication to their horses and each other was noticed by many and I could not be more proud of these young women.

Here are the results:

Crossrail Hunter Division: Katie Larson riding Rugged Soul, also known as "Reggie," placed 3rd, 4th and 6th.

Schooling Hunter: Elsie Viera ridinng Art I An Artbreaker, also known as "Tiny," placed 3rd out of 35 horses over fences. She and Tiny placed 4th and 5th out of 15 horses on the flat.

Beginner Rider Division: Caitlin Schneider and "Kicker" were Reserve Champion. Vannessa Tuepker and Platinum, also known as "Devon," placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th.

More Free Stuff
We have added more incentive prizes for Stephens seniors who take the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) this spring.  All seniors who are selected for our sample and take the assessment will be entered in a drawing to win lunch or dinner for yourself and two guests with our president, Dr. Dianne Lynch!  Another newly added prize is four tickets to the fabulous "New Works" dance concert in April. That's in addition to the prizes already announced:  six $25 gift certificates for the Bookshelf, a $100 Columbia Mall gift card, four tickets to the Spring Fashion Show, four pairs of tickets to "HMS Pinafore" in May, and a free night's stay at the Guest Suites at Stephens.  Everyone will have a great chance to win something!

The CLA is a test of critical-thinking skills, not the usual "fill-in-the-bubble" stuff.  Seniors: if you have been selected for the sample, you'll receive an email in the next two weeks with an appointment date/time for CLA. Watch for it. Contact Dr. Terry with any questions
