The adventure begins..
Well, this is it: I am officially writing a blog about my dream summer internship at none other than Victoria’s Secret Corporate Offices! Pinch me! Okay, but seriously, one cannot accurately describe how humbled and blessed I feel to be given this opportunity! However, it didn’t come easily: it took some elbow grease and savvy.
But that’s a story to come.
I want to tell you, my soon-to-be loyal blog followers, about me first. I’m Terra, a Fashion Marketing and Management student at Stephens College. I plan to graduate this coming December with my Bachelors. I am extremely involved with Young Life, and I’ve been a volunteer leader for three years now. I also have worked as an associate at Victoria’s Secret for the past two years(more on that in a second).
I’m from a small town (okay well kinda…Jeff City is smaller than Columbia), and I’ve always had big dreams, big goals, and big expectations. However, when I first came to Stephens as a wide-eyed freshmen, I would not have told you that I wanted to intern for Victoria’s Secret. Not once had it EVER crossed my mind. I mean, let’s face it, we all have the same impression of Victoria’s Secret: they sell sex by exploiting the beautiful bodies of women they call their “Angels.” They create a certain image that they claim as being sexy, bold, and confident.
Come on now people you know you were thinking the same exact thing.
So how did I end up wanting to intern for Victoria’s Secret? I suppose that’s a two part answer and the first will be told in this posting about me. I first wrote a paper for my Honors Seminar class my freshmen year of college about the impact lingerie had on the 1950s woman (interesting right?). I enjoyed researching the topic, and an interest in the lingerie industry sprouted. In April of 2011, I was hired as a part-time sales associate at the local Victoria’s Secret. I honestly applied to several places and landed a job at good ole’ Vicky’s Secret. I was just saving up money to buy a new car, so a job was a job to me.
But something changed.
My job turned into a passion. I loved going to work, and it was unlike any job I had had before. I was given sales goals, received excellent training, and was supported by both my managers and my co-workers. My peers and managers cared about me as an individual. One manager in particular, Sarah, inspired me to work hard. She had this passion for the brand that seemed to radiate out of her. She genuinely cared about the customers, greeted customers in a genuine way and desired to give them a unique shopping experience tailored to the individual. Wow. I wanted to be just like her.
Additionally, I got to work with some of the best women ever. Not only was my team at store 691 encouraging, the customers I assisted helped solidify my passion for the brand. The thing I love about the lingerie industry is that each customer has a story. Her story might include one of marriage, weight loss, or a new job. I mean, my first experience with the company was when I needed a bra for my high school prom. I needed something that was a push-up, halter, and a low-back. Victoria’s Secret had exactly what I needed – the Very Sexy Multiway! They helped connect a bra to my story.
Some stories are not as joyful, such as women who have undergone mastectomy surgery. These women, and others too, believe the lies that flood their heads saying that they are not pretty enough, rich enough, or confident enough to wear our lingerie. At Victoria’s Secret, we provide women with a full service experience including a bra fitting and styling. We listen, we connect, and we inspire. We make her feel beautiful. We empower her. Most of all, we help build up her self-confidence. And that is what I love most about my job. I get to touch the lives of women. I get to help make a difference in her life. And that, my friends, makes my job worth it. It is what drives my passion and drives my love for the brand.
As soon as I realized my passion for the customers and the brand, I knew I had to find an internship at Victoria’s Secret’s corporate offices. And thus my adventure began.
