Okay, so I finally sat down to blog about my experiences so far in Columbus. Yes, this would mean that I finally have a new laptop. A MAC in fact (sorry, I didn’t intend for that to rhyme). I’m only in debt to my brother though….
At any rate, let me tell you guys all about Columbus, or C-bus for short.
I’m living at this pretty groovy place right off of OSU’s campus, so the place is packed with a bunch of college students like me. I have yet to talk to any of them, but I’ve been go-go-go since arriving. The complex has a pool, hot tub, sand volleyball court, study room, free tanning, and a parking garage. Talk about heaven for a college student. My apartment itself is fairly small, but it is home for the next 10 weeks. Here’s my little room! I even have VS Pink bedding.
I have two roommates as well. Iffy, who is originally from Nigeria but grew up in Cincinnati, lives adjacent to me. She is absolutely wonderful. She has been so incredibly welcoming, friendly, and talkative. She’s a big family lady. My other roommate is Kelsey from Cleveland. I have only had a five minute conversation with her so far because she is always so busy. I already have a funny story about her though. I accidentally ran into her at her job while I was out with my mom. I didn’t recognize her, but she recognized me and said hi. I already like her too.
Okay, so what have I done so far? I suppose I should say what haven’t I done so far?! Thursday, my mother and I explored the nearby area. This included finding the Jazzercise center, local grocery stores, and the downtown area. There’s this area in downtown Columbus called the Short North. This strip is filled with artsy stores, unique restaurants, bars, and college students. On recommendation, my mother and I ended up at this themed restaurant (I’m a sucker for themed restaurants) called the Surly Girl Saloon. OMG! If you are ever in Columbus, this is a must-see restaurant. It’s very eclectic. Here’s a few pictures of the restaurant.

One of the best parts about eating at Surly Girl was getting a free eye patch with my meal!

On Friday, we took a test drive out to where I will be working for the next 10 weeks. We took a wrong turn once, so I’m thankful that we drove out to Reynoldsburg prior to Monday morning (Reynoldsburg is the suburb where Limited Brands is located). Without getting turned around, my commute will be approximately 25 minutes. It honestly did not feel like it took that long. I wonder what Monday morning traffic will look like. *shudder* Afterwards, we headed to Easton Mall. I soon found out that Les Wexner himself, Limited Brands’ CEO, built this outdoor/indoor mall. While most stores were way beyond my budget (Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Kate Spade), I enjoyed walking around. I had never seen White Barn Candle and Henri Bendel stores (both owned by Limited Brands) before. Of course, I had to stop in at Victoria’s Secret, which was the flagship in the U.S. It was beautiful! The mannequins were perfect; they even had formed boobs (I know this is odd, but they were so much better than the ones at any standard VS). The flagship had a VSX store attached, something that I had never seen before. The store was so incredibly neat and pretty and included two big screens playing this past year’s VS fashion show (I gawked for a while).
Later in the day, we drove to the Polaris mall. I don’t think serendipity is the correct word, but two peculiar but awesome occurrences happened. At a shoe store, an associate was chatting with my mom about where we were from and why were were in Columbus. The manager looked at me and said that she was from Columbia and said, “Hey, you look really familiar. Did you shop at Trade Home?” Shock. Uhm, yes, I had shopped at Trade Home in Columbia, and my brain registered that I knew this woman!! What a small world!
Things got more strange.
While walking past the VSX stand alone store, we walked past this woman who looked oddly familiar. I stopped my mom and said, “Mom, wait, that woman looks familiar. Hold on, let me think.” It occurred to me that the woman standing in front of the VSX store was the head merchant for VSX. She was also one of the people who interviewed me when I flew out to Columbus. After a quick argument between me and my mother about saying hi, I mustered up some courage and said hi. (Keep in mind, I was self-conscious because I didn’t look my best that day). Thank the Lord above that I did go talk to her! She remembered my name and was so excited to say hi and chat for a little bit. She said she was sad that I wasn’t going to be working with her directly (meaning I won’t be working with VSX products), but she might have accidentally slipped what category I will be working in (details later).
After Polaris, my mother and I met up with Erik, my brother, and his girlfriend, Laura. At the restaurant FlipSide, we ran into my roommate Kelsey (which again, I didn’t recognize her), and our server had just finished moving out to Columbus from…wait for it… COLUMBIA!! Okay, there was definitely something in the air on Friday. I spent Saturday hanging out with everyone before my mom was dropped off at the airport. Laura, Erik and I drove over to the Worthington/Dublin area to eat dinner with Laura’s brother and dad. After hanging out there for a couple of hours, Laura drove me to my apartment to grab some things so I could spend the night at her house. If I didn’t like my roommates enough, Iffy left me a cute note on my mirror before she headed home for the week.
What a sweet roommate!
Sunday was spent watching The Crossing’s podcast (my church in Columbia), checking out a church in New Albany with Erik and Laura, hanging by the pool, Jazzercising, and writing my blog. Wait, that means I’m almost finished with my post today (Sorry it had to be so long. I’m not even including EVERYTHING that happened).
So now, I’m all packed for tomorrow with several alarms set. I have to be at Limited Brands by 7:45. I’m definitely nervous and I’ve probably overshot how early I need to leave (I’m just making sure that I’m not late!). I have NO IDEA what I will wear tomorrow (not that I have a lot of options). First day jitters, GAH! I’m gonna finish up getting ready for bed and watch a little bit more of The Princess Diaries. Stay tuned for more.
