Graduate Resident
Residence Life Department
Stephens College is a small, private, women's college that embraces a strong commitment to a caring and positive residential environment. The Graduate Resident (GR) expresses, by word and deed, the philosophy and policies of Residence Life and supports the mission of the College. The GR lives on campus and works with the Residence and Student Life staffs to promote the intellectual, social, physical, ethical, and cultural development of all students. The GR works under the direct supervision of the Director of Residence Life.
QUALIFICATIONS
A. Enrollment in graduate program.
B. Residence hall experience or similar residence life experience.
C. A commitment to college student development and an interest in working at a women's college.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
A. Remuneration : Graduate Residents will receive
- stipend of $5,000

B. Period of Employment : A ten month contract beginning August 1, and ending May 31. GRs may not accept additional employment without prior approval.
C. The GR will be responsible for teaching INT:101, Learning Strategies Seminar in the fall and spring
semesters.
D. The GR will average 20 hours/week . It is important that the Graduate Resident be
available to staff and students. Requirements will include evening meetings, hall/campus events,
scheduled office hours as the learning resource consultant, in addition to on-call responsibilities .
E. GR is responsible for the opening and closing of the residence halls for each break
(including Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring Breaks) and each semester. Travel arrangements
should be made with this understanding and prior approval from the Director of Residence Life.
F. The GR attends weekly meetings with Student Life professionals and residence life staffs within their buildings.
G. The GR will be responsible for the development and implementation of
programming on a regular basis to enhance the learning of all students.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Major responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Supervise and mentor undergraduate staff in the residence halls.
- Attend regular meetings with Residence Life staff to discuss hall business and share campus-wide information. Coordinate and facilitate weekly staff meetings within the hall.
- Aid in the coordination and implementation of Residence Life activities which could include selection, programming, evaluation, housing assignment process, etc.
- Assist in the coordination and facilitation of training programs including in-service meetings. Work collaboratively with all members of the Residence Life staff. Participate and support program activities in other halls as well as your own.
- Assist the RD in the management of the hall desk operation.
- Serve as an advisor to the residence hall councils (where applicable). This includes attending hall council meetings and activities regularly.
- Serve every third week on the emergency on-call phone` for the total campus environment.
- Respond to medical and safety emergencies and crises by following outlined campus procedures. Know how to contact Stephens Security, Columbia Police and fellow staff members for assistance. Be familiar with Counseling Services, Student Services Office, Student Health, the Switchboard and other campus resources. Know evacuation procedures for fire; be able to use a fire extinguisher. Understand tornado and earthquake safety procedures as well.
- Maintain and respect issues of confidentiality. Know when and how to make judgment calls regarding confidentiality in accordance with staff training
- Work with the RAs in completing room condition reports.
- Serve as a role model for students. GRs serve as important educators for women at Stephens College.
- Maintain appropriate conduct throughout the residence halls.
- Be present in the hall. Be available and accessible to students. Maintain a "where am I" board on your door.
- Develop a community environment by building a positive rapport with residents. Focus on living conditions that promote studying, and support RAs and RDs in this effort. Encourage self-responsibility among residents and promote consideration and respect among and between all residents.
- Work with RAs and RDs to assist students with academic, social or personal concerns and refer students to appropriate resources. Problems will vary greatly from student to student as well as how RAs and RDs respond to student needs. Be attentive and sensitive to the uniqueness of each resident's personal growth, to the diversity of backgrounds and lifestyles.
- Know Stephens College Residence Life policies. Be familiar with Residence Life policies identified in Within the Ivy . Know how and when to complete Incident Report forms.
- Be alert to physical surroundings. Be prepared to respond to maintenance needs in the building.
- Time off: Graduate Residents are expected to set aside an adequate amount of time to devote to their academic program and personal needs and interests. A GR is not required to work during scheduled vacation periods (Thanksgiving, Semester and Spring Breaks).
