STAFF PERSONNEL POLICIES
These policies shall apply to all staff employees of the College except to the extent that they are superseded by or inconsistent with the employee's individual appointment letter, in which case the latter shall control. Staff shall mean all employees except faculty employees and children’s school teaching faculty. However, certain sections of this manual may also be applicable to faculty or children’s school faculty employees of the College.

Definitions
For the purposes of this manual, the following definitions shall apply:
- Appointment Period. For the purpose of determining holiday pay eligibility, "appointment period" shall mean that portion of the fiscal year during which a full-time or part-time employee maintains pay status. The appointment period shall include the period of time during the winter break, unless the employee is not in pay status immediately before and immediately after the break period.
- Benefit Eligible Employee. Any employee that works a minimum of .75 Full Time Equivalent hours. Please note that Adjunct Faculty and Temporary employees are not benefit eligible.
- Child. Any female or male child or stepchild of a Stephens College employee.
- Dismissal. Involuntary termination of employment initiated by Stephens College.
- Exempt Employees. Employees exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act, as amended. Exempt employees hold positions which have extensive responsibility for planning and decision making within the College.
- Full-time Employee. An employee hired in a position for which the normal work schedule is forty hours per week.
- Full-Time Equivalency (FTE). The equivalent number of hours in proportion to a full time employee. (e.g. a .4 FTE employee would work 16 hours a week .4 FTE * 40 hours).
- Full-time Student. A student enrolled in 12 credit hours or more per semester.
- Immediate Family Member. Any person having one of the following relationships to an employee of Stephens College: spouse, parent, aunt, aunt-in-law, uncle, uncle-in-law, cousin, cousin-in-law, child/step child, parent-in-law, step parent, grandparent, brother, brother-in-law, sister, or sister-in-law.
- Leave without pay. A temporary nonpay status and absence from work requested by an employee and approved by the supervisor.
- Nonexempt Employees. Employees who must receive overtime compensation for all time worked in excess of 40 hours in a single work week under the Fair Labor Standards Act, as amended.
- Part-time Employee. An employee hired in a position for which the normal work schedule is less than forty hours per week.
- Part-time Student. A Student enrolled in less than 12 credit hours per semester.
- Relative. Any person, including immediate family members, related to an employee by blood, marriage or adoption.
- Resignation. Voluntary termination of employment initiated by the employee.
- Retiree. A Staff Retiree is defined as Age + Years of Service = 75 with a minimum of 5 years of service.
- Student-employee. A full-time student enrolled at Stephens College working part-time for the College.
- Suspension without pay. A temporary nonpay status and absence from work required by Stephens College.
- Temporary Employee. An employee hired on an "as needed basis” for a limited period of time. Temporary employees are not benefit eligible employees.
