An Enduring Essence: The Strength of the Past Ensures the Future The Stephens campus of today is not merely a collection of bricks and mortar. It is a living monument to 32,000 Stephens women — women who, since the College's founding in 1833, have built upon their Stephens experiences to enrich their communities worldwide. From its inception as a school for the daughters of Columbia's leading citizens to its current status as a premier national liberal arts college for women in the Midwest (and one of fewer than 70 remaining women's colleges in the United States), Stephens has evolved as an outstanding national leader in women's education. Whether its students arrived by horse and buggy, by train on the Stephens Special, or by minivan, young women have always been drawn to Stephens as a place uniquely suited to their needs and their era — a place that encourages self-discovery and provides the knowledge and skills for success. For thousands of young women, Stephens opened a new realm of possibility, challenging them in their pursuits, celebrating their triumphs. Through the generations, when survival necessitated that Stephens adapt to a changing society, the College excelled through innovation. Stephens evolved as women's needs evolved and continues to change to meet the needs of women today and in the future. Steadfast in its mission to create a community dedicated to the triumph of women's spirits and minds, Stephens remains today what it always has been — a testament to all that is possible for women. For those who hold her in the highest esteem, The Campaign for Stephens: It's Her Turn is an opportunity to give back to Stephens all that she has given to so many. This $35 million campaign will strengthen the College's endowment and operating fund, and support capital improvements in learning resources, student services and the living environment. It's Her Turn...for every young woman to come into her own at a time when women are embracing greater opportunities than ever before and to realize the uniqueness of a Stephens education as she prepares for success in her career, her community, her life. It's Her Turn...for Stephens College, offering an experience that is increasingly rare and utterly empowering, to achieve renewed strength, firmly rooted in her tradition of innovative education for women. It's Her Turn...for every alumna to give back to her alma mater, where she gained so much, and to ensure that Stephens has an even greater impact upon a generation of women who will soon follow in her footsteps.
