Stephens Volleyball Swept by Lyon in Final Match of 2013Stars’ middle hitter Alyssa Beavers posted a career-high hitting percentage (.727) in the 3-0 loss
COLUMBIA, Mo. – (Box Score) Stephens College middle hitter posted a career-best .727 attack efficiency, but it wasn’t enough as the Stars fell to Lyon College, 28-26, 25-23, 25-20, Saturday (Nov. 9) at Silverthorne Arena.
With the loss, Stephens finished its 2013 season at 6-24 overall and 1-10 in American Midwest Conference (AMC) play. The visiting Scots moved to 4-7 in conference and secured a birth to next week’s AMC Volleyball Tournament.
The first set was back-and-forth with six lead changes and 12 ties. Following a kill by Samantha Phegley, the Stars took the lead at 19-18 and Beavers scored in three of the next four rallies to take a 22-19 advantage. The Scots battled back and blocked a Yonne Nasimiyu attack to clinch the 28-26 win in a marathon first set.
Stephens built its first five-point lead at 13-8 following a service ace by sophomore Emily Manczuk. However, the momentum was halted as Lyon erupted for six points during the next seven rallies. After relinquishing the lead to the Scots, the Stars tied the match at three different points, 17-17, 19-19 and then again at 23-23. Lyon’s Carson Ward came up big, putting down a kill and her third service ace of the set for a 25-23 victory.
The Scots never trailed in the third set, jumping out to a 6-1 lead, which was powered by five kills and a service ace. The Stars moved within three, but that was the closest they would get in the final set.
Lyon setter Ferrin Macon (5) and Carson Ward (4) spearheaded the Scots’ dominant serving with a combined nine service aces on the afternoon.
Beavers, who started off the first and second sets a perfect 6-for-6 on attacks, finished the match with a team-high nine kills. The freshman from St. Louis, Mo. also had a team-high four blocks (2 solo, 2 assisted) and two service aces.
Setter Samantha Phegley registered her 11th double-double of the season with 21 assists, while libero Tanya Avington led all players with 15 digs.
