Benedictine-Springfield Slips Past Stars in Five-SetterThe Stephens College volleyball team yielded the final two frames after holding a 2-1 advantage on the road
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – (Box Score) The Stephens College volleyball team went the distance for just the second time this season, however, Saturday’s match at Benedictine University-Springfield ended differently for the Stars. This time around, the Stars surrendered a 2-1 lead and lost the five-setter 21-25, 25-19, 25-19, 21-25, 13-15.
In the season opener, Stephens went five sets with Southwestern (Kan.) and outlasted the Moundbuilders, 19-25, 25-14, 25-20, 17-25, 15-9.
After missing nine matches in the middle of the season due to injury, freshman middle hitter Kerri Kircher seems to have returned to form as she led the Stars with 20 kills on .441 hitting. Kircher also had a productive day at the net, issuing two solo blocks and a pair of assisted blocks.
Two other Stars joined Kircher with double-digit kills including sophomore captain Madison Reale with 14 and freshman Yonne Nasimiyu with 10.
Stephens’ setter Samantha Phegley led the team defensively with 11 digs and dished out 40 assists to record her ninth double-double of the year.
Despite putting up their third-best team attack percentage (.258) of the season the season, the Stars fell at the hands of the Bulldogs, who had just one AMC win entering today’s contest.
With the loss, Stephens College dropped to 6-22 overall and 1-8 in AMC action. The Stars return home to Silverthorne Arena for their final two matches as they welcome Arkansas schools Williams Baptist College and Lyon College on Friday and Saturday.
