Stephens Volleyball Captures First AMC Win on Senior NightThe Stars defeated Harris-Stowe State (25-21, 25-13, 25-13) on Monday evening
COLUMBIA, Mo. – (Box Score) After playing a front-loaded league schedule that included three teams ranked in the NAIA Top 25, the Stephens College volleyball team finally celebrated its first American Midwest Conference (AMC) win this season with a 3-0 sweep of Harris-Stowe State University. With the 25-21, 25-13, 25-13 victory on Senior Night, the Stars improved to 6-20 overall and 1-6 in AMC play.
The win snaps a seven-game losing streak at home, a stretch which consisted of seven 3-0 losses.
Despite jumping out to a 3-1 lead in the first set, the Stars fell behind by as much as five and were unable to reclaim the lead until the 19-18 mark. Both Stephens (.290) and Harris-Stowe State (.286) had virtually the same hitting percentage, but it was the 15 kills and three aces that powered the Stars to a 25-21 victory. Freshman middle hitter Alyssa Beavers hit an impressive .667 with six kills on nine swings in the first set.
By the start of the second stanza, the Stephens squad found its groove and gradually worked its way up to a 12-point margin by the end of the set. Several Stars contributed offensively as the team totaled 16 kills, including Madison Reale (5), Kerri Kircher (4), Beavers (3), Samantha Phegley (2), Emily Manczuk (1) and Jenna Zmyslony (1).
The momentum carried over into the final frame as Stephens scored eight consecutive points to begin the set. HSSU chipped away at the lead and was within six at one point (16-10), but that was the closest the Hornets would get.
Beavers led all scorers with a career-high 14 kills. She also hit above the .500 mark for the third time this season. Joining Beavers with double-digit kills was freshman middle hitter Kerri Kircher (11).
It was also fitting that the Stars’ lone senior – Jenna Zmyslony – made a significant contribution on her Senior Night, recording five kills, five digs, and a pair of back-to-back service aces in the first set.
Setter Samantha Phegley was one assist shy of her season-best 42 assists, while adding three kills and eight digs to the mix. Libero Tanya Avington led the Stars defensively with 11 digs.
The Stephens volleyball team will travel to Hannibal-LaGrange on Halloween Thursday and Benedictine-Springfield on Saturday (Nov. 2) before returning to Silverthorne Arena for two final regular-season contests.
