Stephens Volleyball Earns the Split on Day One of STLCOP TournamentThe Stars defeated Harris-Stowe State before losing in straight sets to Oakland City University
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Stephens College snapped its six-game losing streak with a win over Harris-Stowe State in the opening round of the St. Louis College of Pharmacy Volleyball Tournament on Friday (Oct. 18). The Stars, however, couldn’t complete the sweep and dropped a 3-0 decision to a strong Oakland City (Ind.) squad.
Friday’s match between Harris-Stowe State and Stephens was the first of two meetings in 2013. The Hornets will visit Silverthorne Arena later this season for a match that will factor into the AMC standings.
With the split, the Stars moved to 4-16 overall. They will square off with Midway (Ky.) in an elimination match on Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
Stephens 3, Harris-Stowe State 0 (Box Score)
Sophomore Madison Reale and freshman Alyssa Beavers powered the Stars offensively in the first set, with five kills and three kills, respectively. The Hornets held the lead once (9-8) and tied the game three different times, but Stephens pulled away late to win 25-19.
The Stars made things more difficult for HSSU in the second, hitting a match-best .240, while the Hornets registered a .000 hitting percentage. Additionally, Stephens went ahead 4-1 in the earlygoing and never allowed the Hornets to take the lead. Beavers led the Stars in the second set with four kills and helped the team to its largest margin of victory at 25-14.
The positive momentum for Stephens carried over into the final stretch as the Stars began Set #3 with a 6-0 run. Maintaining the lead throughout, Stephens wrapped up the match with a 25-16 victory. For the second set in a row, Beavers led the team in scoring, this time with three kills, two consecutive service aces and a solo block. She finished with a match-high 10 kills and .400 attack percentage.
Oakland City 3, Stephens 0 (Box Score)
The 12-2 Lady Oaks put their best foot forward in the first set, rounding up 17 kills for an impressive .464 hitting average. Meanwhile, Stephens had just nine kills on .156 hitting. OCU claimed set one, 25-16.
In the second frame, a string of offensive miscues doomed the Stars as the team combined for 14 errors. It took just 40 rallies for Oakland City’s win, as it defeated Stephens 25-15.
The Stars’ best chance at making a comeback was the third set. Despite a slow start, the Stephens College volleyball team inched its way back into the game and pulled with one at the 17-18 mark. Madison Reale and Alyssa Beavers teamed up for 10 kills in the third set, but it wasn’t enough as the Stars lost 22-25.
Reale registered her second double-double of the season with a team-high 10 kills and 10 digs. The Lady Oaks had two players with double-digit kills, including #13 Kaebra LaGrange, who hit .800 for the match with 12 kills and zero errors on 15 attempts.
