Stars Fall in Straight Sets to No. 15 Missouri BaptistThe Stephens College volleyball team couldn't overcome a dynamic offensive attack from the visiting Spartans
COLUMBIA, Mo. Ė (Box Score) A strong showing from sophomores Madison Reale and Emily Manczuk was not enough for Stephens College volleyball, as the Stars were swept by 15th-ranked Missouri Baptist University, 18-25, 8-25, 17-25, on Monday (Oct. 7) at Silverthorne Arena. The sophomore duo combined for 15 of the Starsí 26 kills and helped keep the team from hitting negative on the night.
With the loss, Stephens falls to 3-12 overall and 0-4 in American Midwest Conference action, while Missouri Baptist won for the 20th time in its last 21 matches. The Spartans improved to 20-1 on the season and remains undefeated (7-0) in league play.
Missouri Baptist, who entered the contest ranked fifth in the nation in kills per set (13.87) and ninth in hitting percentage (.270), finished well over its average in both offensive categories as the team recorded 45 kills and hit above .400 in each set.
The beginning of the match saw 11 ties and four different lead changes, but the Spartans prevailed in the later half of the first set. They carried their momentum into the second stanza hitting a whopping .483 with zero attack errors, while the Stars notched a match-low seven kills.
Stephens got off to a good start in the third set holding the lead at the 10-9 mark, however, the No. 15 team in the nation cranked out nine straight points and didnít look back.
Reale had a team-high eight kills for the Stars, and also added three assists and nine digs to her stat line. Manczuk followed closely behind with seven kills and a .357 hitting percentage. Libero Tanya Avington registered the most digs of either team with 11 on the evening.
The Stephens College volleyball team is back on the road this Friday (Oct. 11) with a pair of matches in Lawrence, Kan. against Benedictine (Kan.) and Haskell Indian Nations (Kan.). The Stars will play back-to-back matches at 5 and 7 p.m.
