Stephens Volleyball Swept by CMU EaglesStars lose on the road at Central Methodist University: 12-25, 22-25, 12-25
FAYETTE, Mo. – (Box Score) For just the third time this season, the Stephens College volleyball team (2-9, 0-3 AMC) dropped a match in straight sets. On Tuesday (Sept. 24), the Stars suffered a 12-25, 22-25, 12-25 loss to Central Methodist University at the Eagles’ Puckett Fieldhouse.
A sluggish start for Stephens contributed to the quick 11-3 lead for Central Methodist. The Eagles controlled the remainder of the set behind double-digit kills and 10 errors committed by the Stars. CMU won the first set, 25-12.
Stephens was more competitive in the second frame, holding the lead twice at the 5-4 and 16-15 marks. The Eagles retaliated with a nine-point run of their own and had set-point four different times before closing out the set at 25-22. Sophomore captain Madison Reale paced the Stars in Set No. 2, posting a .600 swing percentage along with six kills and three digs. Freshman middle hitter Kerri Kircher also added three kills and three blocks (1 solo, 2 assisted) to the mix.
In the third set, CMU exploited the Stars’ error-ridden night and finished the match with another 25-12 win.
The Stars struggled offensively, recording their second-lowest output of the season with just 21 kills. Category leaders for the match were Samantha Phegley with 16 assists, Reale with eight kills, Yonne Nasimiyu with seven digs, Kircher with four blocks and Alyssa Beavers with one service ace.
Stephens College will look to rebound from the loss with its first home match of the season on Friday (Sept. 27) at 7 p.m. The Stars host Avila University (5-11) of the Heart of America Athletic Conference at Silverthorne Arena.
