MAYFIELD, Ky. – (Box Score) Despite a promising first-set win on Thursday (Sept. 12), the Stephens College volleyball team was unable to fend off Mid-Continent University. The new American Midwest Conference member bounced back from an early deficit and captured the next three sets to win 20-25, 28-26, 25-17, 25-15.
Both the Stars (1-7, 0-2 AMC) and Cougars traded points early in the opening set, but it was the former who took the lead for good at the 16-15 mark. Stephens won by a five-point margin and compiled 12 kills and a .154 hitting percentage compared to MCU’s 11 kills and .079 attack rating.
In the second set of the afternoon, Stephens and Mid-Continent went the distance and stretched the game out to 54 total rallies. The Stars had set point opportunities at 25-24 and 26-25, but MCU received two clutch blocks and a kill by Olivia Hoelker to put the set away at 28-26.
The Cougars distanced themselves from the Stars in the third set with a 25-17 victory. In the fourth and final set, Stephens College tied the set at 11-11 in hope of a rally, however Mid-Continent had more gas left in the tank and rattled off 10 consecutive points. They finished off the match with a 25-15 win.
