STEPHENS STARS SIGN GEMMA MCKENNA AS NAIA SOFTBALL RECRUIT FOR 2006-2007

GemmaCOLUMBIA , Mo. - Stephens College announces the signing of Gemma McKenna, a senior at Southern Boone High School in Ashland , Mo. , for the 2006-2007 softball season. McKenna, an outfielder, will sign at noon today, March 22, 2006, at Southern Boone High School. The upcoming season will mark the return of softball to the College. Cross country will also be added to the College's NAIA sports teams in volleyball, basketball, swimming and tennis.

During her high school career, McKenna provided leadership for the Eagles. She posted a .964 fielding percentage with only two errors in 69 games over her four-year varsity career.  McKenna batted .314 and had a .333 on base percentage as a senior. In 2005, McKenna lead the Eagles with 13 runs batted in and three triples.  She also placed among team leaders in nearly every statistical area.  Her excellence on the softball field brought her a 2003 Rookie of the Year Award, 2005 Little Dixie All-Conference Selection, and two career Class 2 All-District Selections.

"It has been my intention to build the Stephens Stars Softball program on a firm foundation. I see Gemma as being a valuable part of this foundation. Work ethic, athletic ability, enthusiasm for the game and an overall positive attitude make Gemma McKenna the type of student-athlete we will be proud to have on campus," " said Chris Collier, Stephens College head softball coach. "Gemma is coming on board at a crucial time for Stars Softball.  What we do on the field over the next few years will define our program, and I'm excited to have such a talented ball player to help us make our softball team a success."
