Travis Cook enters his first year as the head cross country coach for Stephens College.
The Centralia, Mo., native is a former cross country and track & field athlete at the high school and collegiate level. Cook competed in the pole vault at NAIA's Central Methodist University during the 2007-08 season.
Following his short stint at CMU, Cook transferred to the University of Missouri and obtained both his bachelor's and master's degree. In May, the first-year head coach finished his Master of Education in Counseling Psychology with a specific emphasis in sports psychology.
With his background in sports psychology, Cook has developed a coaching philosophy with four main tenets:
- An importance placed on an individual's development, rather than a dependency on performance.
- An importance placed on academics in order to develop well-rounded individuals.
- An emphasis placed on teamwork and humility to achieve a common goal.
- Recognition of every student-athlete's potential for excellence. This also includes the appreciation of mastering the sport and experiencing the plateau.
