Stars’ Forward Dana Heggemann Nets AMC Player of the Week Honors
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Stephens College sophomore forward Dana Heggemann had a career night against Missouri Valley College last week, and Monday (Dec. 2), she was named AMC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Heggemann becomes the first Stephens College basketball player to garner the AMC Player of the Week award since Megan Sheffield in December of 2011.
Despite a turnover-ridden first half where Stephens fell behind 46-16 at the break, Heggemann’s stellar performance salvaged the game and helped the Stars nearly outscore the Vikings in the second half.
The 6-foot forward from Warrenton, Mo., led all scorers on Tuesday with a career-high 21 points, 17 of which came after halftime. She continued her career night at the free-throw line as she drew foul after foul and achieved a personal-best 12 free throws made on 13 attempts. Doing a little bit of everything, Heggemann also dished out a team-high three assists and pulled down seven rebounds, including three on the offensive glass.
Through four games, the Stars’ forward is averaging 13 points per game, good for 14th in the league, while also ranking among the top 10 in free-throw percentage (5th) and assists per game (9th).
Heggemann and the Stars have a busy week ahead playing four games in an eight-day span. On Tuesday (Dec. 3), the Stephens basketball team will travel to Elsah, Ill. for a matchup with NCAA Division III Principia College at 6 p.m. The Stars will be back home Thursday (Dec. 5) to kick off AMC play against No. 6 Freed Hardeman.
