COLUMBIA, Mo. – (Box Score) The Stephens College basketball team kicked off its 2013-14 campaign at home on Friday (Nov. 1) with an 89-44 loss to Lindenwood University-Belleville. Considering the circumstances – playing with just six players – the Stars can take plenty of momentum from the second half and apply it to their upcoming game on Nov. 8 at Missouri Valley College.
Stephens, which trailed 56-15 at halftime, nearly played the Lynx point-for-point in the second half. Lindenwood-Belleville outscored the Stars by just four (33-29) following the break.
The Lynx jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Stephens College sophomore Seleena Neal scored her first points in a Star uniform and the first points of the 2013-14 season by knocking down a pair free throws. A pesky Lynx defense held the Stars in check, limiting the team to just five field goals in the first half.
Guard Seleena Neal made quick work in the second half, coming up with a steal and fast-break layup just 13 seconds in. The basket jumpstarted the Stephens’ offense, which shot 52 percent from the field in the second half.
Lindenwood-Belleville extended its lead to 55 points with 15:25 remaining, but a Stars’ 13-4 run over the next 10 minutes narrowed the margin to 81-37.
The Lynx starting five shot lights out, combining for 62 points on 27-of-37 shooting. Lindenwood-Belleville guard Shelby Kohrman led all scorers with 22 points, while Stars’ guard Seleena Neal was right behind with 21 points. Neal was 6-of-7 from the charity stripe and added four steals, four rebounds and three assists to her stat line.
