Stephens Overwhelmed by Benedictine-Springfield Defense in 69-58 LossTurnover woes overshadow solid shooting night for the Stars

COLUMBIA, Mo. – (Box Score) For the third time this season, the Stephens College basketball team registered a higher field goal percentage than its opponent, yet came up short in the win column. The Stars held a narrow lead at halftime and continued to hang tough before Benedictine-Springfield put its finishing touches on the game with a 69-58 victory.
Starting out as a back and forth battle, the Stars overcame an early five-point deficit and jumped out to its biggest lead of the game at 21-13. During the 13-0 run for Stephens, Davielle McCoy completed an and-one opportunity and two additional free throws, Briannah Tapp hit a pair of 3-pointers and Dana Heggemann capped it off with a basket at the 10:49 mark.
The visiting Bulldogs made a run of their own tying the game at 21-21, although their foul trouble put the Stars in the bonus with eight minutes remaining.
Despite a four-minute drought to end the half, the Stars made use of their extra free-throw attempts and secured a 33-31 lead heading into the break. It marked the first halftime lead for the Stars this season.
It continued to be neck-and-neck with five ties and four lead changes midway through the second half. BENU took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Ryan Edwards, who had the hot hand. Edwards finished the night with a game- and season-high 29 points.
But it was the Bulldog defense that came up big on Thursday forcing 30 Stephens turnovers, 15 in each half. Benedictine ended up scoring 30 points off turnovers compared to the Stars’ six.
Sophomore guard Seleena Neal led the Stars with 16 points on 7-of-16 shooting, while Dana Heggemann recorded her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Davielle McCoy also joined the Neal and Heggemann in double figures with 11.
Stephens remains winless and fell to 0-19 overall and 0-13 in AMC action. Up next for the Stars is a road trip to Mid-Continent (Ky.) on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
