A group of us got to go on an all day safari in Kruger National Park. They came to our camp to pick us up at 5:30! I can only get out of bed that earlier if it involves something as exciting as a real African safari. The silver lining of waking up that early was the sunrise. It was breath taking!
We spent all day driving through the park and didn’t even get done driving down all the extra roads. We sadly didn’t see all of the Big 5; Lion, Rhino, Elephant, Leopard and Buffalo, but we did see some rarer animals. The first thing we saw when we arrived through the gates was a pack of African wild dogs. Wild dogs are a rare site in the wild and some of the volunteers who had gone on an earlier safari were quite upset that we saw some and they didn’t.
Leopards are also a rare site. We were extra lucky because we saw two! Both times we saw them it was because of the impala who were looking to not get eaten. Impala are as common as squirrels in the US. They say that if you don’t see an impala on your safari you get your money back. The second leopard was blind in one eye but seemed to be fairing in the wild quite well.
